Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias visited the port of Piraeus on Tuesday as passenger traffic began to peak during the summer holiday season, meeting coast guard officials to review security measures at the country’s busiest port, and in ports throughout Greece.
Kikilias said about 10.7 million passengers depart annually from Piraeus for the Greek islands, adding that hundreds of coast guard personnel are deployed at the port and thousands more across the country’s ports to ensure the safe and smooth movement of travelers.
“Safety comes first for us,” he said, urging passengers to follow the instructions of coast guard officers at all ports.
