Dozens of reports of fuel oil pollution have been registered along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coastline over the past several days, with authorities confirming that the number of alerts submitted to the environmental inspectorate in Burgas has exceeded 40 within a four-day period. New traces of oil contamination were again observed late yesterday on Butamyata Beach near Sinemorets.
The Maritime Administration said it maintains continuous monitoring of Bulgarian maritime zones and regularly checks for pollution linked to vessels. However, officials stressed that no active source of contamination has been identified and no ship has been linked to the incidents.
Authorities argue that the substances washing ashore are not from a recent spill but are instead remnants of older oil deposits. According to their assessment, strong sea conditions in recent days have brought these residues back onto the beaches.
They also noted that it is currently impossible to determine a specific origin for the pollution, as the material appears to consist of leftover hydrocarbons from an unspecified period.
The situation reflects a continuation of a pattern reported along the coast in recent days, with affected areas stretching from Tsarevo to Kamchia. The first signs of contamination were recorded at Arcutino beach last week, followed by repeated sightings across multiple coastal locations.
