The oceanographic vessel 'Aegeus' of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research which carried out missions in the Saronic Gulf on May 10 and 19.
The mysterious odor that blanketed coastal suburbs of Athens and Piraeus three days ago remains unexplained, with authorities and researchers unable to identify its source.
The Hellenic Center for Marine Research, whose vessel happened to be conducting surveys in the Saronic Gulf on May 19, ruled out marine pollution as the cause. The agency found no evidence of hydrogen sulfide concentrations, toxic algal blooms, or upwelling of anoxic waters that could account for widespread odor. A follow-up survey is planned for May 26.
Results from air sampling by the University of Athens Environmental Chemistry Laboratory on behalf of the Environment Ministry haven’t been released.
Officials have ruled out EYDAP’s wastewater facilities on Psyttaleia, natural gas leaks, and passing LNG vessels. Similar incidents occurred twice in previous years, also without explanation.
