Crews of Greek gas grid operator DESFA were on alert on Tuesday after several residents and businesses reported smelling natural gas in the southern suburbs of Athens.
The smell is particularly strong in the districts of Nea Smyrni, Kallithea, Dafne, Alimos, Neos Kosmos and Palaio Faliro, while television channel SKAI said it received information about school evacuations in some areas.
The Municipality of Nea Smyrni issued a statement about the incident, calling on residents to keep their windows closed.
