However, they warned that actions taken against opposition figures must not create the impression that the justice system is being used as a tool to silence dissenting voices.

The Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organization (GAFAMORG) and the National Conscience Party (NCP) have expressed deep concern over the revocation of the bail granted to activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, warning that any attempt to intimidate opposition voices could further shrink Nigeria’s democratic space.

In a joint statement released in June 2026, the groups declared that “nothing must happen to Omoyele Sowore,” while calling on the judiciary, security agencies and other state institutions to uphold constitutional freedoms and ensure the activist’s safety.

The organisations said they had closely followed recent developments surrounding Sowore’s case, including the decision of Justice Mohammed Umar to revoke his bail and order his remand after he allegedly failed to appear in court on a scheduled hearing date.

According to the statement, publicly available reports indicated that the bail revocation was not based on Sowore’s political views but on the court’s determination that he failed to provide sufficient justification for his absence despite seeking an adjournment.
