Greek authorities have conducted a drill at the archaeological site of Ancient Messini in the southern Peloponnese region to deal with the scenario of a wildfire forcing a mass evacuation of visitors and staff, officials said Thursday.
The Culture Ministry said Tuesday’s exercise involved ministry staff together with the Fire Service, police, municipal authorities and ambulance crews. It was organised in cooperation with the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry.
Greece’s summer wildfires have on several occasions threatened archaeological sites – including Ancient Olympia in the western Peloponnese – but have not caused injury to visitors or severe damage to antiquities.
