A wildfire broke out Thursday afternoon in low vegetation near the Kapota military camp in Menidi, north of Athens, prompting a major firefighting response.
The fire was burning dry grass, according to authorities. Seventy-three firefighters, including three specialized wildfire teams, were deployed with 25 vehicles. Two helicopters were also taking part in the operation.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Greece’s 112 emergency alert system sent a warning to residents in the surrounding area, urging them to remain on alert and follow instructions from authorities.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings.
