The ministries of culture and climate change have drawn up new fire safety measures for Greece’s archaeological sites designed to protect antiquities and visitors alike in the event of wildfire.
Under the new regulations made public Wednesday, every site will be ranked on a scale of 1-5 for its wildfire risk. The managers of each site will have to draw up tailored measures for fire protection, including management of the surrounding flora, escape routes, fire drills and personnel training.
Local archaeological service departments will have until December to compile all the required paperwork to central ministry officials and local Fire Service representatives.
Sites found wanting in preparedness will result in local archaeological service departments being fined from €1,000-5,000.
