The party stated that the incident had heightened concerns about what it described as increasing repression of opposition voices in the country.
The African Action Congress (AAC) has raised concerns over what it described as an assassination attempt on its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following an incident that occurred during the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Abuja.
In a statement issued on June 15, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the party alleged that Sowore was attacked by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force during the protest organized by the Take It Back Movement and other civil society groups.
The AAC said it was "deeply alarmed by the brutal attack on our presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, during the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Abuja, which was organized by the Take It Back Movement and other civil society groups across the country."
According to the party, "during the peaceful demonstration, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force sprayed an unknown aerosol-based chemical directly into Sowore's face, causing him to collapse and temporarily lose consciousness."
