The Bayelsa State chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned the remand of the party’s presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre, describing it as a serious threat to justice, democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
The condemnation was made during a press conference addressed by the Bayelsa State Chairman of the AAC, Emmanuel Pious, who expressed concern over what he described as the implications of the court's decision for judicial independence and democratic governance.
According to Pious, Sowore’s remand has heightened fears about the increasing use of state institutions to target, intimidate and silence opposition voices, activists and government critics.
He said the party was deeply troubled by the development and warned that actions capable of eroding public confidence in the judiciary and the broader justice system should have no place in a democratic society.
“The African Action Congress, AAC, Bayelsa State Chapter, expresses its deep disappointment and strong disagreement with the decision to remand our National Leader and Presidential Candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Prison,” Pious said.
