A court in northern Greece has sentenced the owner of a Halkidiki amusement park to life in prison and three others to lesser sentences over the 2024 death of a 19-year-old on a fairground ride prosecutors said was dangerously defective and poorly maintained.
The 60-year-old owner was convicted Saturday of intentional homicide with probable intent, along with attempted homicide charges, in the August 2024 incident involving the “Crazy Dance” ride. He was slapped with an additional sentence of 8 years for attempted homicide in the case of the victium’s younger brother, who survived the accident and was only slightly injured.
His 54-year-old wife and co-owner, found guilty of complicity, was sentenced to 9 years; a ride operator, 23, was sentenced to 6 years for dangerous exposure and a certifying engineer was sentenced to 13 years.
Three of the four sentenced defendants, with the exception of the owner, were released pending their appeal. The court recognized mitigating circumstances for the owner’s wife and the operator.
The ruling was issued in the town Giannitsa Saturday following a months-long trial.
