A 22-year-old high school learner has been arrested and charged after a viral video allegedly showing him assaulting a 21-year-old woman sparked outrage on social media and prompted swift police action in the Free State.

The arrest follows the circulation of disturbing footage in which the woman is allegedly confronted by occupants of a vehicle who accuse her of standing in the road and blocking their way. During the confrontation, the 22-year-old suspect is seen allegedly assaulting the woman.

Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli confirmed the arrest on Thursday, saying investigators moved swiftly after the video surfaced online.

“Following the surfacing of a video clip on various social media platforms showing a physical altercation where a male individual is seen assaulting a 21-year-old female, police can confirm that a 22-year-old high school learner has been arrested and charged.”

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with many calling for accountability and renewed action against gender-based violence.
