A number of government and private organisations observed World Environment Day with a host of programmes to promote awareness and sustainability initiatives across Tiruchi on Friday.At the Tiruchi Division of Southern Railway, activities were organised under the theme “Climate Change and the Challenges Posed by Mother Earth.”Balak Ram Negi, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi Division, administered a pledge on environmental protection, sustainable living, and conservation of natural resources to fellow officers.As part of the observance, division officers planted 50 saplings on the Rail Museum premises, reaffirming the division’s commitment to environmental sustainability and greener surroundings.The division had conducted an earlier campaign from May 15 to June 5 to mark World Environment Day across stations and railway premises.In a special message to employees, K. Ashok, executive director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Tiruchi, highlighted the unit’s ongoing green initiatives as part of the World Environment Day programme on Friday.Mr. Ashok urged all employees to reaffirm their dedication to environmental stewardship by adopting sustainable practices both at the workplace and in their daily lives to secure a cleaner and greener future. He also inaugurated a mass tree plantation drive inside the factory premises.A tree plantation drive was launched by the Perambalur District Legal Services Authority, led by district chairman L.S. Sathiyamurthy, in the Perambalur District Court Complex.Tribal initiativeTo mark the day, Kauvery Hospital, Tiruchi, distributed free beehive boxes to 50 women from tribal communities living in the Pachamalai hills as part of its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable livelihood development.The boxes were distributed by R. Anbuchezhian, facility director, Kauvery Hospital, to beneficiaries from the villages of Manalodai, Thonur, Chinna Iluppur, Periya Iluppur, and Kurichi in the Pachamalai region.The initiative aims at providing tribal women with an opportunity to engage in beekeeping as a sustainable source of income.In his address, Mr. Anbuchezhian said: “Our hospital is committed to protecting th enatural ecosystem of the Pachamalai hills, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and supporting the livelihood of tribal communities in this region.”
