The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is monitoring severe weather conditions impacting various parts of the province after temperatures plummeted significantly, particularly in areas surrounding the Drakensberg.

Heavy snowfall has been reported on the Lesotho side of Sani Pass, forcing the immediate closure of this route.

"Motorists and travelers from KZN intending to cross into Lesotho are advised to suspend their trips until the route is declared safe," said KZN Cogta in a statement.

"Furthermore, a severe storm yesterday afternoon swept through the uMlalazi Local Municipality, uprooting trees and damaging residential roofs. The KZN Provincial Disaster Management Centre confirms that emergency response teams are on the ground, and the full extent of the destruction will be known once formal assessments are concluded.
