Heavy snowfall has led to the closure of Sani Pass, with severe weather causing damage across KwaZulu-Natal.

Heavy snowfall has forced the closure of the iconic Sani Pass while severe storm damage has been reported in northern KwaZulu-Natal as freezing weather conditions continue to affect large parts of the province.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said on Friday that it was closely monitoring severe weather conditions across the province, particularly in areas surrounding the Drakensberg where temperatures have dropped sharply.

According to the department, significant snowfall has been recorded on the Lesotho side of Sani Pass, resulting in the immediate closure of the mountain route.

Authorities have advised motorists and travellers planning to cross into Lesotho to postpone their journeys until the pass is declared safe for travel.
