Road Traffic Inspectorate teams monitor snow-covered roads in KwaZulu-Natal as heavy snowfall forces route closures and emergency response teams are deployed to assist affected communities.
Authorities have closed a major road linking parts of KwaZulu-Natal as heavy snowfall triggered by a cut-off low-pressure system continues to disrupt travel and affect communities in the province's southern regions.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma announced on Sunday that the R617 between Swartberg and Underberg remains closed, warning motorists against travelling on the route as snow continues to fall.
"The cut-off-low pressure system has triggered heavy snowfall," the department said in an update, adding that motorists travelling to or from Kokstad should avoid the R617 and use the R56 as an alternative route.
The closure forms part of the province's snowfall response plan, which has been activated as adverse weather conditions persist across several districts.
