Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert as snowfall blankets parts of the Drakensberg and heavy rain threatens flooding across large parts of the province, with emergency teams on standby to respond to dangerous weather conditions.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said officials are closely monitoring the province’s road network, particularly key routes vulnerable to snow and flooding.
Grader operators have been placed on standby to clear snow before it accumulates beyond 30cm, while authorities are keeping a close watch on Van Reenen Pass between Harrismith and Ladysmith to determine whether road closures are necessary.
“Van Reenen between Harrismith and Ladysmith is being closely monitored to ensure road closure where necessary. This will help to prevent motorists from being stuck on the N3. Coastal and low-lying areas where there are informal settlements are being closely monitored,” Duma said.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple weather warnings as a cut-off low pressure system brings widespread rain, snow and freezing temperatures to several provinces.
