Amnesty International has condemned the violent attack on peaceful protesters who took to the streets of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, June 2, to demand urgent action over the persistent abduction of schoolchildren across Nigeria.
According to the human rights organisation, the protesters, who were participating in the nationwide #BringBackOurPupilsAndTeachers campaign organised by the Take It Back Movement, were attacked by a group allegedly sponsored to disrupt the peaceful demonstration.
The protesters had embarked on a peaceful march from the Mokola area of Ibadan towards Bodija to draw public attention to the failure of Nigerian authorities to adequately protect schoolchildren, teachers, and educational institutions from incessant attacks and abductions by armed groups.
However, the demonstration was violently interrupted at the Sango area of the city when the attackers descended on the protesters.
