Police in a remote mountainous area of central Greece have discovered a large off-grid cannabis farm that used sustainable irrigation methods to produce marijuana worth up to €2 million.
A police statement said one farm worker was arrested on the spot Wednesday, while another two managed to escape on foot taking advantage of the very rough terrain to avoid their pursuers, who included officers from the anti-terrorism squad.
The 2,500-square-meter plantation above Kammena Vourla contained 1,383 cannabis plants up to 1.6 meters in height.
Parts of the farm contained rudimentary greenhouses, while the plants were irrigated with a four-kilometer network of hosepipe linked to two water reservoirs, which were made of logs covered with plastic sheeting that filled with run-off water from a local stream and had a capacity of three tons each.
The farm included a shed functioning as a well-appointed kitchen, as well as camouflaged tents for the workers’ living quarters.
