A total of 3,000 students from kindergarten to Grade 3 in Southern Leyte received school supplies from GMA Kapuso Foundation.According to "24 Oras" on Wednesday, the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan project extended assistance to the many parents striving to provide their children with essentials for the new school year.Limasawa Island was among the areas that the foundation visited for the project. The island is a popular tourist destination during the summer, but livelihood on the island becomes challenging during the rainy season when fewer tourists visit.Alger Gilles, a tricycle driver, recalled that business weakened during the rainy months last year."Noong nakaraang taon, June, July medyo humina kami nung pasukan na. Estudyante lang 'yung naano namin, 500 [pesos]," he said. Many mothers in Barangay Lugsongan also sell dried squid to help their husbands, who work as fishermen.Rolyn Malunas recalled her joy when they learned their child was able to finish nursing school and pass the licensure examination."Natutuwa, nakakaiyak naman talaga. Nalaman namin 'yung anak namin nakapasa ng nursing. Mahirap kasi 'pag andoon na sa laot 'yung asawa ko," she shared.Jocelyn Delos Santos, for her part, believes that education is the most valuable thing parents can give their children. She and her husband work together to provide for their family; he goes out to fish, while she sells dried squid. However, earning a stable income can be difficult. Per Jocelyn, seven kilos of fresh squid would only yield a kilo of dried squid after the drying process. This is then sold for around P300 per kilo.To help ease the burden on families, the GMA Kapuso Foundation traveled not just to Limasawa Island, but also to San Ricardo, Pintuyan, San Juan, and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte, to distribute complete school supplies."Handa na sila sa pagpasok, wala nang problema sa kanilang mga school supplies," said Limasawa Island SDO Flordeliza Dalupere. For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, Shopee, and Palawan Pay.
