Police on Tuesday denied reports that they had received and ignored past complaints over domestic violence suffered by a woman who was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband in southern Greece this week.

A police statement said that allegations of gender-based or domestic violence are always taken seriously and fully investigated.

A 41-year-old man was arrested early Monday in his Kalamata flat after police, summoned by neighbors, found the body of his wife in the couple’s bedroom. She had been stabbed multiple times with a knife.

Tuesday’s police statement said that officers had been contacted in November 2025 by people voicing concern because the woman had not gone to an appointment and was not answering her phone. But, it added, there had been no mention of alleged abuse and when they visited the flat the woman seemed well and did not mention anything about violence or a need for protection.
