Police are investigating the deaths of a 45-year-old woman and a man in Nea Smyrni, a southern suburb of Athens, as a suspected femicide.
Security camera footage from an apartment building reportedly shows the man waiting outside for the 45-year-old woman, shooting her as she arrived and then turning the gun on himself. Police have recovered the weapon, and the footage is considered a key piece of evidence.
Investigators believe the man, who was of Albanian origin, ambushed the woman early Sunday and shot her before killing himself with the same weapon.
The woman was found dead outside the entrance of the building, where her daughter reportedly lives. She did not appear to be a resident herself.
Police are also examining the relationship between the two and whether they had been a couple. Initial reports did not establish the circumstances of their deaths, which were initially treated as a double shooting.
