Inflation in Greece jumped to 5% in May from 4.6% in April, according to preliminary data issued by the European Union statistics agency Eurostat on Tuesday, fuelled by higher energy prices.

Eurozone inflation also rose to 3.2%, from 3% the previous month.

Greece’s consumer price index is among the highest in the EU, with only Bulgaria (6.3%) and Lithuania (5.1%) exceeding it in May.

At the Eurozone level, the largest contribution to inflation was made by the energy sector (+10.9% in May from 10.8% in April), as a result of the war in the Middle East. It is followed by the services sector (+3.5% compared to 3% in April), food, alcohol and tobacco (+2% compared to 2.4% in April), and non-energy industrial goods (+0.9% compared to 0.8% in April).
