A Hanover Park man accused of kidnapping and murdering his wife of 10 years after an argument over alleged infidelity appeared in the Western Cape High Court sitting in the Wynberg Regional Court on Monday, where the State indicated it will seek a life sentence if he is convicted.

Duncan Hoorn is facing charges of kidnapping, murder and defeating the ends of justice following the death of his wife, Chantal Pasqualle-Hoorn. The Hanover Park mother was allegedly assaulted and stabbed on June 28, 2024. She remained in a coma for a month before succumbing to her injuries on July 28, 2024. At the time, community members expressed outrage after Hoorn was not immediately arrested. He was eventually apprehended two days after Chantal was laid to rest.

According to the indictment, State prosecutor Renee Uys is expected to prove that Hoorn unlawfully and intentionally deprived Chantal of her freedom of movement by locking her inside their home and refusing to allow her to leave.The State further alleges that Hoorn assaulted Chantal, inflicting multiple injuries by hitting and kicking her, jumping on her and assaulting her head before stabbing her repeatedly with a knife or another object unknown to the State.
