A coroner’s examination found evidence consistent with both electrocution and drowning in the death of a 10-year-old boy whose body was recovered from an irrigation canal in northern Greece, authorities said on Thursday.

The findings are expected to be included in the case file compiled by police investigating the incident in rural Serres.

Police arrested the boy’s 28-year-old mother on charges of child endangerment. A 43-year-old local homeowner was also arrested following allegations that she had illegally connected electrical wiring through the irrigation canal where the child was found.

According to police sources, the boy had been trying to cross the canal by walking on a wooden plank when he ended up in the water.

The child was found unconscious at about 11.45 a.m. Wednesday and was recovered by firefighters before being taken to a local medical center, where his death was confirmed.
