Two boys, aged eight and 10, were on Sunday found dead inside a locked car in Cyprus after they were allegedly left there to sleep, police said.

The children were discovered in the vehicle, which had been left in a field near a residential area in the British base of Dhekelia. Emergency crews attended the scene, but medical teams said the boys had suffered severe effects from heat exposure, including burns and extreme muscle stiffness.

Police from the British bases have arrested the children’s father and stepmother on suspicion of negligence linked to the deaths. The vehicle was reportedly locked and parked near a block of flats.

The children, who were of Bulgarian origin, were later examined as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Forensic tests are expected to determine the exact cause of death.
