MANILA, Philippines — A bill that penalizes the creation and willful spreading of false information which leads to public harm or national security risks has been approved on second reading by the House of Representatives.
During the House’s session on Tuesday, House Bill No. 9465 or the proposed Digital Media Anti-False Information Act was approved on second reading via viva voce or voice voting.
If enacted, the bill sets a penalty of six to 12 year imprisonment and fines ranging from as low as P500,000 to P10 million for anyone found guilty of deliberately spreading misinformation and disinformation.
According to Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, one of the authors of the bill, the government has to be equipped with the tools needed to prevent the spread of false information, as wrong details can travel so fast with the current technology.
