MANILA, Philippines — A group seeking to enact an anti-political dynasty law through a people’s initiative criticized a similar measure that was recently approved on second reading by the House of Representatives for having “weak prohibitions.”
In a statement on Thursday, the Dapat Isa Lang movement (D1L) described House Bill No. 8389, or the the Act Prohibiting Political Dynasties In National And Local Elective Offices, as a “watered-down bill” for only barring relatives within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity from holding public office at the same time.
The principal authors of the bill were Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III and Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos, with 173 other lawmakers as coauthors.
