MANILA, Philippines — As concerns loom over the nearing approval of the proposed right-to-information and anti-fake-news bills at the House of Representatives, Parañaque Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan reassured the public that both measures would protect the people and secure transparency.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Yamsuan said the two measures would work in tandem, with House Bill (HB) No. 9397, or the proposed Right to Information Act, ensuring that the public is informed about developments at all levels of government, while HB No. 9465, or the proposed Digital Media Anti-False Information Act, seeks to curb misinformation and disinformation.

“These two measures working in synergy will serve as vital safeguards that will eliminate the information gaps which allow false information to flourish,” said Yamsuan, vice chairperson of the House committee on public information that tackled the two bills.

“If our fellow Filipinos have the right information and are protected against the spread of fake news, they can make the right decisions and participate in crafting government policies and programs that respond to their needs,” he added.
