Refuse collection and street sweeping services for some areas are unfortunately disrupted due to labour issues. | eThekwini Facebook. The Metro Trading Services Reform Programme aims to restore reliable electricity, water and waste management services across South Africa’s eight metropolitan municipalities. Backed by R108 billion in combined public investment over six years, the initiative seeks to reverse years of infrastructure decline, weak governance and poor accountability that have undermined economic growth and public confidence.

Reliable basic services are the foundation of dignified living and thriving communities. The certainty of switching on a stove to cook an evening meal, clean running water from a tap and regular waste collection is fundamental to daily life.

When these services work well, they improve quality of life, strengthen neighbourhoods and create an environment in which businesses can grow, invest and create jobs.

Recognising this, government earlier this year launched the Metro Trading Services Reform Programme to reverse the decline in municipal services. The programme focuses on South Africa’s eight metropolitan municipalities, the economic engines of the country and home to more than 40% of the population.
