The Labor Ministry on Tuesday presented new draft legislation that would bring Greece into line with European Union regulations on salary transparency and gender equality in pay among peers.
The bill introduces measures that would apply both to employers’ hiring processes and to salary policies for employees.
Labor Minister Niki Kerameus said the proposed law would help establish “greater transparency and equal opportunities” in Greece’s labor market.
“The intention is to practically ensure that an employee’s salary is not affected by their gender, but only by the job they perform and its value,” she told a press conference in Athens.
Under the draft law, during the hiring process employers would be obliged to inform applicants what their pay – or the salary range – would be and what the pertinent collective labor agreement involves. Furthermore, employers would not be allowed to ask prospective employees what their previous salary was.
