Employees in Bulgaria will soon have the legal right to request official information about average salaries for their job position within their company under new amendments to the country’s anti-discrimination legislation.
The urgent changes to the Commission for Protection Against Discrimination framework are intended to implement a European Union directive aimed at increasing pay transparency and ensuring equal pay between men and women.
Under the proposed rules, which are expected to take effect on June 7, 2026, any employee will be able to submit a written request to their employer for information regarding average pay levels by position and gender. Employers will be required to respond within two months with a written report containing details about the employee’s own salary and the average compensation for workers performing the same or equivalent work.
The legislation also includes safeguards for personal data protection. If sharing the information could reveal another employee’s exact salary, the employer may instead provide the data to a trade union organization or directly to the anti-discrimination commission, which would then advise the employee on possible legal action without breaching confidentiality.
