Labor Minister Niki Kerameus.
Greece’s conservative government has tabled in Parliament new draft legislation intended to ensure gender equality in pay as well as transparency in employers’ hiring and salary policies, authorities said Wednesday.
Labor Minister Niki Kerameus said the proposed law was meant to eradicate gender as a factor shaping wage policy for people doing the same or similar work.
According to Labor Ministry data, women in Greece are currently paid an average 13.4% less than their male colleagues per hour of work, while the European Union average gap is still 11.1% in favor of men.
“Employees’ salaries must be exclusively determined by the work they do and their value,” Kerameus said. “Gender cannot affect pay.”
