Police sealed off an area in the Mikrolimano district of Piraeus early Saturday after gunshots were reported during an incident involving a person found carrying firearms and a bag containing six hand grenades, authorities said.
According to state broadcaster ERT, officers approached the individual at around 5.30 a.m. during a random police check after deeming the person suspicious. During the encounter, the individual, who was outside a store, allegedly pointed one of three firearms found in their possession at a police officer.
An officer responded by using a service weapon.
Bomb-disposal experts were dispatched to examine the bag containing the grenades, while the wider area was cordoned off as a precaution.
The injured person was taken to hospital by ambulance, police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou told ERT. She added that the individual was not carrying identification documents and had not yet been identified.
