A 31-year-old man who was carrying a knife is in serious condition after being shot in the abdomen by a police officer at a station in Mandra, west of Athens.
According to police, the man entered the station wielding a knife and refused to surrender it. Officers said that they attempted to restrain and disarm him, but a struggle broke out, during which one officer fired his service weapon, hitting him once in the stomach.
An ambulance was called immediately, and the injured man was taken to the Thriasio Hospital in Elefsina, where he remains hospitalized in serious condition.
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the incident, including what led to the man’s actions and the circumstances surrounding the officer’s decision to fire.
Police said the man appeared to have psychological issues, as was subsequently confirmed by authorities investigating the case, who said he has a history of threats and domestic violence.
