Five people were taken into custody on the island of Crete during a social gathering where stray gunfire triggered a police raid and the seizure of numerous weapons, the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported on Thursday.
The suspects – four men and one woman, ranging in age from 25 to 60 – face charges related to weapons violations and reckless discharge of firearms, according to a police statement.
The incident took place at an outdoor party on Wednesday in the area of Iraklio, where guests fired celebratory shots into the air. Responding officers found five spent shell casings of various calibers at the scene and promptly arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of pulling the trigger.
A subsequent search of a home and storage facility used by the suspects uncovered a pistol with two magazines, nine hunting rifles, an improvised silencer, a homemade pen-gun, six knives, a metal sword and nearly 280 rounds of ammunition.
Authorities have initiated proceedings to revoke the suspects’ existing firearm licenses.
