Police have arrested two Turkish nationals accused of smuggling firearms from Turkey into Greece to supply criminal groups, authorities said.

Police said the arrests followed an intelligence-led investigation that indicated a large shipment of weapons was about to be transported into Greece aboard international freight trucks.

Officers from the Northern Greece Organized Crime Division carried out a coordinated operation in the Thrace region late Wednesday, targeting two trucks that had entered Greece through a border crossing in the Evros region.

According to police, the driver of the first truck acted as a scout, checking the route for the presence of law enforcement officers, while the second vehicle transported the weapons.

During a search of the second truck, officers discovered a travel bag and a suitcase concealed beneath the cab’s bed and behind the driver’s seat. Inside, they found 50 vacuum-sealed pistols and 49 magazines, all of which were seized along with the truck used to transport them.
