Authorities have arrested two Turkish nationals in connection with an alleged weapons trafficking operation in Greece’s northeastern Thrace region, police said.
The suspects are accused of transporting untraceable firearms – factory pistols completely stripped of brands and serial numbers – which authorities believe were intended for fellow nationals residing in Greece.
According to police, the case developed after intelligence uncovered a criminal network, primarily composed of Turkish nationals, smuggling weapons across the Evros border region to supply domestic criminal groups.
On Saturday, investigators received a tip that a major shipment of weapons would be transported by vehicle from Xanthi to Komotini that afternoon.
In response, police units deployed across both cities and along the connecting road network. Officers intercepted the vehicle on the Xanthi-Komotini provincial road and detained the driver, who is one of the suspects.
