A woman has been arrested on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Samos on suspicion of fatally beating a dog whose horrific injuries triggered broad condemnation and a public appeal for witnesses to help identify the perpetrator.

A police statement Thursday said a local woman has been arrested over the attack in which an unspecified blunt instrument was used.

The 12-year-old female dog was found on April 23 outside a house in the Avanti area near Spatharaioi village by a local resident, according to the Samos Animal Welfare Association. It weighed just 9 kilograms (20 pounds).

The animal, whom carers later named Beba, had lost her left eye and suffered fractures to her lower jaw and skull, severe trauma to her right ear and a dislocated hind leg. Volunteers initially treated the dog on Samos before she was transferred to a veterinary polyclinic in Halkida on Evia for specialized care. It died 15 days after the attack.

The Samos welfare group had appealed for anyone who could help identify the perpetrator to contact authorities.
