Police have identified and are preparing charges against a motorist suspected of running over with her car and killing a dog in the southern Peloponnese region, in an incident that caused a stir after video footage of it became public.

State ERT television reported Monday that the 60-year-old woman allegedly told police she didn’t see the dog on the road ahead of her soon enough to avoid hitting it.

Social media users commenting on the video claimed that she seemed to intentionally run over the animal.

She was reportedly identified over the weekend, has already provided oral testimony and is expected to also submit her testimony in writing within the next two days.

Animal welfare groups said the road where the animal was killed, near Gastouni in the western Peloponnese, goes through an area with a lot of stray dogs that are mostly former household pets that their owners abandoned there.
