Two people died in the southern Peloponnese region late Monday when a car collided with a fire engine heading to a major wildfire near Troizina, state ERT television said.
ERT said the road accident occurred near the southern town of Sparta, on the highway north to Tripoli. The precise circumstances of the crash were not immediately known. ERT said the two vehicles collided head-on.
More than 100 firefighters were striving to control the wildfire near the village of Aghia Eleni in the northwestern Peloponnese. Residents and visitors were ordered to evacuate the village as a precaution.
