A 17-year-old girl who had been hospitalized in critical condition after she and another teenage girl fell from the rooftop of an apartment building in Athens has died, the hospital announced late Thursday.
The KAT hospital said the teen, who was admitted on May 12, was pronounced dead at 7.54 p.m. “The hospital expresses its sincere condolences to her family,” the statement added.
The tragic incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon when the two girls climbed to the rooftop of a six-floor apartment building in the suburb of Ilioupoli, where one of the two lived, and jumped. One of the teens died on the scene, while the second was gravely injured and transferred to KAT’s ICU.
Police say the girls had locked the rooftop door behind them, presumably to prevent anyone from intervening. Reports have also indicated that one of the girls had left a suicide note citing academic pressure as the reason for their decision.
The police investigation is ongoing.
