The A14 highway between Vasto and Termoli and the Bari-Pescara railway between Termoli and Montenero di Bisaccia were closed as a precautionary measure on Tuesday after a big sinkhole at Petacciato, in southern Molise, was 'reawakened' following a wave of extreme weather.

Parts of the highway are damaged and experts are assessing the situation, sources said.

Torrential rain caused rivers to burst their banks and led to severe flooding in many parts of central and southern Italy last week and provoked the collapse of a bridge on State Highway 16 over the Trigno River in Molise.

A 53-year-old man is missing after the car he was driving plunged into the river following the collapse of the bridge.
