Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet on Monday approved a bill presented by Health Minister Orazio Schillaci and Family Minister Eugenia Roccella that, if approved by parliament, will restrict minors' access to gender-affirming drugs.
Under the bill, a registry will be set at Italian Medicines Agency AIFA to monitor the use of hormones and puberty-blocking drugs in the treatment of gender dysphoria in under-18s.
The register will be used for the prescription of these drugs, which will only be dispensed at hospital pharmacies.
Furthermore, these drugs will only be dispensed with the consent of the national paediatric ethics committee and following strict health ministry protocols.
