As fires continued to smolder near the Greek capital and neighboring regions, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection placed the region, Evia, Lesvos and Chios on a “Red Code” alert, due to a very high risk of wildfires predicted for Wednesday.

For Greece, the danger carried grim resonance: a 2018 wildfire at the seaside community of Mati, near Athens, killed 104 people.

The greater Athens area and the neighbouring island of Evia remained under near maximum fire risk on Tuesday according to the civil protection ministry. #EuropeNews
