The U.S. said it had begun a new wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday after reimposing a naval blockade of Iranian ports, while Tehran threatened to shut off more regional energy exports.

The strikes are aimed to "continue degrading" Tehran's ability to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the US said.

The announcement came after Tehran widened its attacks across the Gulf region earlier on Sunday and claimed the Strait of Hormuz was closed.
