adsFor years, DStv’s business model rested on a straightforward proposition: pay more, get more.
Its premium tiers bundled the best football, movies, international series and entertainment channels into increasingly expensive packages. A household that wanted one or two premium offerings often had little choice but to pay for dozens of channels it barely watched.
That model is becoming harder to defend.
From September 17, MultiChoice is undertaking its biggest DStv package overhaul in 15 years, starting with South Africa. Access becomes Starter, Family becomes Select and Compact becomes Sports, while a new Movies & Series package is being introduced. More significantly, premium entertainment and sports content is being pushed into cheaper tiers.
MultiChoice’s DSTV South African package overhaul signals a deeper change in African pay-TV: consumers are increasingly unwilling to pay for a bundle when they only want a few things from it. And Nigeria could be next.adsads
