Inflation rose to 3.8% in August from 3.4% in the previous month, compared with an increase of 2.9% in August 2025. The development was largely driven by energy prices, as well as increases across a range of services, according to Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Wednesday.
Price increases were recorded in natural gas (40.2%), diesel fuel (30.6%), petrol (15.3%), heating oil (53.2%) and other fuels (4.3%).
By contrast, electricity prices fell by 1.2%. Price hikes were also recorded, among other categories, in rents (6.2%), maintenance and repair works (4.5%), miscellaneous services relating to homes (5.6%), air transport (17.4%), package holidays (6.3%), restaurants, confectionery shops, fast-food outlets and cafes (5.5%), hotels (14.1%), health insurance premiums (7%) and clothing and footwear (5.3%).
Among food and nonalcoholic beverages, notable price increases were recorded in beef (13.5%), lamb and goat meat (11.3%), poultry (2.1%), preserved fish (11.5%), cheese (1.5%), eggs (4.3%), other edible oils (8.8%) and margarine and other vegetable fats (9.6%).
Meanwhile, significant price decreases were recorded in olive oil (15%) and fruit (7.1%). Between July and August, price increases were recorded, among other categories, in electricity (1.5%), natural gas (13.5%), diesel fuel (6.4%), petrol (1.7%), air transport (11.3%) and hotels (2.8%).
