Traffic police in the Athens region have launched a new round of intensive checks on electric scooters, focusing on underage riders, dangerous violations, and businesses that rent or sell the vehicles.
The stepped-up enforcement follows two recent serious crashes involving electric scooters, one on the island of Tinos and another in Glyka Nera, east of Athens, in which a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were seriously injured.
Athens traffic police conducted 6,127 checks in the first eight months of 2026 and recorded 3,700 violations, according to official figures. During the same period, 56 crashes involving electric scooters were recorded in the region, resulting in three serious injuries and 53 minor injuries.
The violations included 1,844 involving riders of rented scooters and 1,800 involving privately owned scooters. The vast majority involved adults, with 3,544 violations recorded among people aged 17 and older. Police also cited 136 16-year-olds and 20 children aged 12 to 15.
The most common infractions were riding without a helmet and excessive speed. Police also reported riders using high-speed thoroughfares and running red lights.
