New, stricter regulations governing the use of electric scooters and other Light Personal Electric Vehicles (LPEVs) are set to take effect in Greece, aiming to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents after Parliament approved the relevant legislation late Tuesday.
The new rules prohibit anyone under the age of 17 from riding electric scooters on public roads, impose steep fines for using them on roads with speed limits exceeding 50 km/h, and introduce penalties for companies that sell, provide, or rent electric scooters to minors under 17.
The tougher regulations come in response to a series of traffic accidents involving young riders.
